Kansai Electric and Cree Demonstrate a 100 kVA Silicon Carbide Three Phase Inverter

The silicon carbide (SiC) power inverter phase leg pictured above, developed jointly by Cree of Durham, NC, and Kansai Electric Power Company of Osaka, Japan, is part of a 110 kVA three-phase inverter that could reduce conversion losses by 50 percent compared to existing silicon (Si) inverters. An inverter is used to convert power from DC to AC, to change operating frequency in variable speed motor drives and to transfer power onto the grid from battery, wind and solar sources.
