The crimes can range from assault to burglary to criminal theft. Many preventive measures have been implemented from warning systems to email/text broadcasts which all address reaction rather than deterrence. We all know criminals are concerned about giving up their identity and one of the ways to help deter them is to minimize spaces that conceal it.
